Background:
Nepal’s healthcare system faces multiple structural and operational challenges due to natural disasters, limited resources, insufficient infrastructure, and lack of technical expertise. At the same time, there is an increasing burden of non-communicable diseases and a need for improved research capacity, patient safety, and health system coordination.
Nepal’s healthcare system faces multiple structural and operational challenges due to natural disasters, limited resources, insufficient infrastructure, and lack of technical expertise. At the same time, there is an increasing burden of non-communicable diseases and a need for improved research capacity, patient safety, and health system coordination.
Objective:
The objective of this report is to assess the feasibility of establishing collaborative healthcare projects between Region Östergötland and healthcare institutions in Kathmandu, Nepal, through the International Medical Programme (IMP).

Results:
The assessment visit identified significant gaps in healthcare delivery, including lack of reliable health data systems, insufficient hygiene practices, and limited access to specialized care. Several potential areas for collaboration were identified, including dermatology, radiology, telemedicine, emergency preparedness, and research training. The use of tele-diagnostics and mobile health applications was highlighted as promising tools for improving access to care, particularly in rural areas. Stakeholders in Nepal expressed interest in collaboration, particularly in strengthening research, education, and emergency medical systems.

There is strong potential for mutually beneficial collaboration between Swedish and Nepalese healthcare institutions. Targeted interventions in digital health, research capacity building, and clinical training could significantly strengthen Nepal’s healthcare system while providing valuable learning opportunities for Swedish professionals.
